The Toothbrushes
It takes about 30 mins of crawling over under and through collapses at this asylum to get from the male wing to the female wing. So many floors are missing and caved in you have to crawl though the tunnels then up to the 2nd floor to traverse a 1/2 fallen floor sitting at a 45 degree angle then back down to the tunnels, etc to find a way from one side to the other. Its like a jungle gym and its a lot of fun but trips here always leave me sore the following day.

But its worth all the effort just to rediscover and photograph something as humanizing as this:
Patient toothbrushes still hanging in a bathroom cabinet in near alphabetical order...

Amazing. I wonder what it is like to be at a place like this when it closes down. I wonder why they never clean it out right away usually.

im sure it comes down to money. there is no room in the budget to demo building, clean stuff out, pay for movers or for someone to haul the stuff away. The stuff you find left behind is usually heavy and or outdates (like old wooden wheel chairs, pianos, old med equip, old appliances) that would be costly and a pain to get rid off... or you find things of no monetary calue, like these toothbrushes

i work for the DMH and i go to alot of trainings and meetings at the still active state hospitals.. and the places acutally dont look too different now from places ive been in after they were closed for only a year hahaha...its horrible.

Lots of stuff in state hospitals is out dated and roughed up and stuff is sotred everywhere... ive been to a few recently closed general hospitals as well and they just looks kinda dusty and lifeless even when they still smell of hospital smells...they arents as pretty to photograph and they dont looks too different then open hospitals just with 1/2 the lights out and no people they feel different, they kidna feel wrong

WOW! This is an amazing image by itself. The effort that you had to go through to get it makes it more so.
